It took around an hour from Marukoma Onsen to Sapporo city. As we approached the city, the weather changed from sunny to a gray sky with partial snow or hail. The weather was suppose to be better in the afternoon so we decided to have a quick lunch near our next destination. (We’ll talk about the lunch in the later post)

丸駒温泉から札幌市内まで車で１時間ほどでした。支笏湖ではあんなに晴れていたのに札幌に入ると曇りと雪まじりの雨模様。今回の旅ではずっと雨マークで、幸運にも立ち寄る先々でぎりぎり雨を避けて来たのですが、札幌では天気予報通りでした。午後から雨が止むと言う予報だったので、目的地近くで簡単に立ち寄れるところでひとまずランチを。

We arrived at the Moerenuma Park around 1pm and the weather was still a mixture of snow but mostly cloudy. As we approached the park from our parking spot, the huge pyramid like structure, The Glass Pyramid “Hidamari” became visible.

札幌入りして最初の目的地はモエレ沼公園。レンタカーがあるウチに先ずはここから攻めようと言う作戦です。お天気が良ければ公園内をレンタサイクルで回ろうと思ったのですが、生憎の雨模様。公園に一番近い無料駐車場P2で車を止めて目の前に聳え立つガラスピラミッド通称“ひだまり”へ向かう。

Moerenuma Park started it’s construction at 1982 and opened in 2005. The park is designed by a sculptor Isamu Noguchi, as a whole park being one single sculpture. This site used to be a landfill of waste (garbages) and the city of Sapporo wanted to turn this area into a “Circular Greenbelt” which are spaces with green that surround Sapporo city in a loop.

モエレ沼公園は1982年着工、2005年完成した公園です。元々はゴミの捨て場で札幌市が市内を囲む様にクリーンベルトを計画する際に（札幌市を緑の円で囲む）モエレ沼公園は企画され、公園の設計を彫刻家イサムノグチ氏に依頼したのです。

As I walked into the Glass Pyramid into the main hall, I looked outside through the large glass structure and the greens, the cloudy sky with a peak of sun shining through, the raindrops on the glass, the gradation of the skyline, was an epiphany moment. No photo will do justice therefore I couldn’t take any photo. Actually the scale of the whole park was too big to capture in photo.

ガラス張りのピラミッド型の建造物の中へ入り、そこから外を見渡すと、遠くで整然に並べいる木々、曇り空の隙間から太陽が差し込む光、雨粒がついたガラス、目の前に水平線に広がる空のグラデーション、洗礼されたかの様な、思考が止まって見入ってしまう光景が広がっていた。写真撮影を試みたが、この美しさを収める事は私の腕では到底無理。実のところ、この公園そのもののスケールを写真に写すのは中々の至難の技だと思った。

Everything was done in a minimalistic way as possible. The greens, the shape and the material of the streets, the walls and the structure of the landscape. Everything was kept as simple as possible to let the final touch done by the nature. The colors of the plants will change from snow covered winter into pink Sakura in spring, lush in green during summer and red in Autumn. The water will be filled in a shallow beach like structure for us to cool down during hot summer, the snow will fall and cover the park white and people will bring sledge to enjoy the slope.

目に入る光景はミニマルそのもの。無駄の物など一つも無い。芝生、公園内を結ぶ道、建造物の壁に使用した素材。。。公園、建造物のフォルム。。。全てがミニマルで、余白が絶妙で、その余白が季節が移り変わる事でいろんな顔を見せてくれる。冬は雪で純白な景色から春の桜色、夏になれば青々と、そして秋には紅葉し、華やかに色づくだろう。公園の一部には夏になると水が溜められ、ちょっとした海辺になったり、雪の季節になれば、一面雪を活かし、ソリびが出来る。

This is my partner’s third Noguchi related site he visited. He visited The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum in Long Island City, NYC and Noguchi Museum, Japan in Takamatsu city, Kagawa Pref. 　All three museum have a different feeling to it. The one in New York and Takamatsu was Noguchi’s studio so you can see his sculpture everywhere. You are pretty much surrounded with Noguchi’s work but for Moerenuma park, the whole park is a sculpture in itself and it’s simply impossible to grasp because of the scale of the park. I would have to observe it from different distance and just experience the space.

博一にとってモエレ沼公園はイサムノグチ関係の訪問先としては３箇所目であり、20年程前にニューヨークのイサムノグチ庭園美術館へ、そして、10数年前には高松のノグチイサム美術館へ行っている。どの場所もそれぞれの個性を放っている。ニューヨークも高松もアトリエ兼美術館なので、彫刻作品がゴロゴロ転がっているが、モエレ沼に関しては全体が一つの彫刻と捕えているので今までのノグチ氏の作品の鑑賞の仕方は通用しない。スケールが大きいゆえ、色んな角度、視点から体験して見ないといけないなと思った。

The weather was holding up and he started climbing the Mt. Moere. The Mountain is just 65 meter above the water lever in Sapporo City but still the only mountain in the northeastern area of the city of Sapporo. It seemed like an easy walk up to the top but as you go on, the path becomes muddy (there are many route to climb up the mountain but he happen to choose the most steep route, dammmmmmm! LOL) The temperature started to drop, the wind is much stronger as you get closer to the top. When we actually managed to reach the top, it was freaking cold and the wind was so strong that we couldn’t the view that much. To finish this hike in a more dramatic way, not snow but hail start pouring down…

雨も止んでいたし、モエレ山に登ろうとなった。彼はスタスタと先を進み、私は渋々ついて行く。モエレ山は65メートルと可愛らしい山ですが、札幌市の北東では唯一の山。山頂に登ると市内を一望できるそう。深く考えなく登り始めたが、足元が濡れてて、滑りやすい。山頂に行くには色んなルートがあるのですが、彼は一番険しいルートを選択。選択と言うか目の前に道が有ったからただ、登ったと言った方が正解。上へ行くにつれ、温度がどんどん下がっていく。風も強さを増し、キツイ。山頂まで行くと立っているのもやっとなほどの強風で流石の博一もビビっていた。記念写真を撮りつつ、足元の石であぁ、イサムノグチねっと感じつつ、それ以外を味わう余裕が無かった。とにかく早く下山せねば、ここで熱でも出たら、大変！（これからホテルへチェックインなのに）この登山を更なるドラマにしたのは下山途中に雹が降り出した事。マジか！

Us standing trying not to freeze ourself. As you can see, the top of the summit was indeed Isamu Noguchi with the stone neatly tiled on the floor. The round steel plate in the middle is embossed with the map of Sapporo and what you can see from this view point.

見ての通り、寒くて固まっている二人です。足元の石のタイルがいかにもイサムノグチ氏。山頂の真ん中にプレートが嵌め込んであり、山頂から見える景色の説明が印字されていた。

He told me the hail was kind of a welcome from Isamu Noguchi and celebrated us with a rainbow on our way back. Yes it was a rainbow kind of day, but I didn’t expect a walk in a park was this tough!

増田が雹はイサムノグチ氏からの歓迎だよ。そして登り切って虹も見せてくれたじゃ無いかって！あぁ、確かに虹が、しかし、公園での時間がこんな試練になるとは。

We took a quick stroll and went back to Glass Pyramid to warm our body up, visited Isamu Noguchi Gallery and a little gift store for some souvenirs. I also got a certificate for climbing up the Mt. Moere..haha

モエレ山を下山後、公園を散歩しつつ、ガラスピラミッドへ戻り暖を取る。イサムノグチギャラリーを見学しつつ、１階のギフトショップでお買い物も楽しんだ。買った物の中にモエレ山登頂した記念の表彰状（？）らしき物も買った。

To be honest, in this trip to the park, I’ve only experience 1/5 of the park. (Though we stayed there for 2 hours) To fully experience this place I think I’ll need a day plus a sketchbook with me. I would love to revisit in different seasons. Isamu Noguchi never disappoints us. To be continued >>>

公園で２時間滞在し、私達なりに楽しみましたが、正直、公園を1/5程しか楽しんでないと思う。それだけここは広いし、ただ見学すると言うより、一日ゆっくり絵を描いたり、ただ、ぼーっと過ごしたりし、空の光が時間帯によって変わったり、地面に映る影を目で追ったり、もっとゆっくり味わって、初めてイサムノグチ氏の意図を感じるのかも知れません。つづく＞＞＞
