December Veggies

This will be the last delivery from Sho Farm for this year. It’s been only 3 month since I started getting deliveries from Sho Farm but these veggies really brighten my days.

12月のお野菜。今月は一回だけのお届けで、本年最後のお野菜便でした。Sho Farmさんからお野菜を届けてもらってからまだ3ヶ月ほどですが、食卓が豊かになった。作る方の心構えも、大切の育てられてお野菜を無駄なく使おうと言う気持ちになる。後、調理がよりシンプルになった。

Mid December Veggies:

  • Broccoli
  • Shiitake Mushroom
  • Spring Onion
  • Buddock root (ごぼう)
  • Lemon
  • Carrot
  • Komatsuna or Japanese Spinach
  • Mizuna (thin leafy greens)

Interesting shape veggies. Carrot and burdock root. I’m planning to thinly slice the carrot for salads and for burdock root, I might deep fried it into chips. I love salads with burdock chips so maybe I’ll do that.


The stem of the broccoli is so thick and long. I’m planning to pickle the stem part in Nuka-doko, a Japanese rice bran pickle. I’ll have to peel the outer, harder part of the stem and just use the inner softer part for the pickle.


It was a surprise to receive shiitake mushroom! Like, wow, they make shiitake too?? I usually thinly slice them and add to my Chinese style soups but for these special ones, I might just grill it and once the mushroom is cooked, I’ll add a dash or soy sauce and squeeze lemon to season it. It’s a simplest way to enjoy this treat.


My mom in law gave me a large bunch of turnips so last week I made soy milk stew with pork meatballs, turnip, onions, spring onions, taro and carrot. The porks and the veggies together makes good soup stock so I just added some salt to taste. All I did was I simmered all the ingredients in water enough to cover it up and when cooked, I added a cup (or a little more) soy milk and thicken the soup by arrowroot starch (or cornstarch). I you want more umami, you can add a tablespoon of white miso (it’s a bit sweeter than the regular miso & its white so it won’t discolor the stew). The tip of adding miso is that miso are salty so add salt after the miso (if needed) and miso’s flavor becomes weaker when cooked too long so adding miso should be the final finishing touch.
